(Description of Vrndavana)

 

 

Text 1

 

atha Vrndavanam dhyayet

sarva-veda-namaskatam

sarvartu-kusumopetam

patatri-gana-naditam

 

atha - now; vrndavanam - on Vrndavana-dhama; dhyayet - one should meditate; sarva - all; veda - by the Vedas; namaskrtam - offered obeisances; sarva - all; rtu - in seasons; kusuma - with flowers; upetam - full; patatri - of birds; gana - by multitudes; naditam - full of warblings.

 

One should now meditate upon Vrndavana-dhama, which is full of flowers during all seasons, and also full of the warbling sounds of many birds. All the Vedic scriptures offer their respectful obeisances to that Vrndavana.

 

Text 2

 

bhramad-bhramara-jhankara-

mukhari-kata-din-mukham

kalindi-jala-kallola-

sitalanila-sevitam

bhramat - wandering; bhramara - of bumble-bees; jankara - with the buzzing sounds; mukhari-krta - made full of sound; dik-mukham - the directions; kalindi - of the Yamuna river; jala - of the water; kallola - by the waves; sitala - cool; anila - by the breeze; sevitam - served.

 

In that Vrndavana, all directions are full of the buzzing sounds of the wandering bumble-bees, and the entire area is pleasantly cooled by the breezes blowing over the waves of the Yamuna river.

 

Text 3

 

nana-puspa-lata-baddha-

vakra-khandais ca manditam

samanodita-candrarka-

tejo-dipena dipitam

 

nana - various; puspa - by flowers; lata - by creepers; baddha - bound; vrksa - of the trees; khandaih - with multitudes; ca - and; manditam - decorated; samana - just like; udita - arisen; candra - the moon; arka - the sun; tejah - the effulgence; dipena - with the splendor; dipitam - illumined.

 

 

That Vrndavana is decorated with many trees covered by various flowering creepers. The entire area is as splendid and effulgent as if the sun and moon had both risen.

kamalotpanna-kalhara-

dhuli-dhusaritambaram

sakha-maga-gana-kirnam

nana-maga-nisevitam

 

kamala - lotuses; utpanna - risen; kalhara - white water lilies; dhuli - with the pollen; dhusarita - made grey; ambaram - sky; sakha-mrga - of monkeys; gana - with multitudes; kirnam - filled; nana - various; mrga - with animals; nisevitam - inhabited.

 

 

The sky is greyish, filled with the pollen of the lotus flowers and white water lilies, monkeys and many other animals reside there.

dvatrimsad-vana-samvitam

vaikunthad ati-saukhyadam

purandara-mukhair devaih

sarvatah samadhirthitam

 

dvatrimsat - 32; vana - with forests; samvitam - covered; vaikunthat - than Vaikuntha; ati-saukhyadam - granting more bliss; purandara - by Lord Indra; mukhaih - headed; devaih - by the demigods; sarvatah - completely; samadhisthitam - meditated upon.

 

That Vrndavana contains 32 forests, and it grants more transcendental bliss even than Vaikuntha. Lord Indra and the other demigods are absorbed in meditation upon that Vrndavana.

 

Text 6

 

tan-madhye ratna-bh/umim ca

suryayuta-sama-prabham

tatra kalpa-tarudyanam

niyatam ratna-varsanam

 

tat - of that Vrndavana; madhye - in the middle; ratna - jewelled; bhumim - ground; ca - and; surya - of suns; ayuta - thousands; sama - equal; prabham - effulgence; tatra - there; kalpa-taru - of desire trees; udyanam - garden; niyatam - established; ratna - of jewels; varsanam - rain.

 

In the middle of Vrndavana there is a jewelled place as splendid as thousands of suns. There is a garden of desire trees which shower jewels (upon the ground).

manikya-sikharollasi-

tan-madhye mani-mandapam

nana-ratna-ganais citram

sarva-tejo-virajitam

 

manikya - of rubies; sikhara - mountain; ullasi - splendid; tat - of that; madhye - in the middle; mani - made of jewels; mandapam - a temple; nana - various; ratna - of jewels; ganaih - with multitudes; citram - colorful and amazing; sarva - all; tejah - with splendor; virajitam - shining.

 

In the middle of a splendid mountain of rubies, there is a jewelled temple. That briliantly effulgent temple appears very colorful and amazing, constructed of many different varieties of jewels.

phala-bhag-ullasac-citra-

vitanair upasobhitam

ratna-torana-gopura-

manikya-vedikanvitam

 

phala-bhaj - of fruit trees; ullasat - splendid; citra - colorful and amazing; vitanaih - with a multitude; upasobhitam - beautiful; ratna - of jewels; torana - with arches; gopura - with gates; manikya - of rubies; vedika - with a platform; anvitam - endowed.

 

 

That temple is surrounded by many colorful, amazing and splendid fruit trees. It's doors are decorated with jewelled arches, and is stands on a platform of rubies.

divyaih samukuraih satsu

muktaphala-virajitam

koti-surya-samabhasam

nirmuktam sad-tarangakaih

 

divyaih - splendid and transcendental; samukuraih - with mirrors; sat - eternal and transcendental; sumuktaphala - with exquisite pearls; virajitam - splendid; koti - millions; surya - of suns; sama - equal; abhasam - splendor; nirmuktam - free; sat-tarangakaih - from the six distresses of material existance.

 

 

Decorated with splendid mirrors and exquisite pearls, that place is as effulgent as millions of suns. It is free from the six distresses of material existance.

 

 

Text 10

 

 

bubhukra va pipasa ca

pranasya manasas tatha

soka-mohau sarirasya

jara-matyu-sad-urmayah

 

bubhuksa - hunger; va - or; pipasa - thirst; ca - and; pranasya - of the life; manasah - of the mind; tatha - and; soka - lamentation; mohau - and illusion; sarirasya - of the body; jara - old-age; mrtyu - and death; sat - six; urmayah - waves.

 

 

There are six waves of material distress. 1. Hunger and 2. thirst are the distresses of the life-air. 3. Lamentation and 4. illusion are the distresses of the mind. 5. Old-age and 6. death are the distresses of the body.

catur-dvara-samayuktam

kapatastaka-sobhitam

tatra kalpa-tarum dhyayet

suvirtam ratna-varsanam

 

catuh - four; dvaram - with doors; samayuktam - endowed; kapata - with panels; astakam - eight; sobhitam - beautified; tatra - there; kalpa-tarum - a desire-tree; dhyayet; one should meditate upon; suvistam - beautiful; ratna - jewels; varsanam - raining.

 

 

That temple is constructed with four doors which have eight splendid panels. One should meditate upon the excellent desire-tree there which appears to shower many jewels.

 

 

Text 12

 

 

sevitam atubhih sarvaih

madhu-sikara-varsinam

garunmata-lasat-patram

pravala-ratna-pallavam

 

sevitam - served; rtubhih - by the seasons; sarvaih - all; mudha-madhu - nectar; sikara - gentle; varsinam - with a rain; garunmata - emeralds; lasat - shining; patram - leaves; pravala - sprouts; ratna - jewels; pallavam - blossoms.

 

 

That desire tree has leaves which are emeralds and blossoms which are various jewels. All the seasons beautify that tree and it appears to gently shower nectar.

 

 

Text 13

 

 

mukta-ratna-pravasitam

padmaraga-phalojjvalam

samsara-tapa-vicchedi-

kusala-cchayam adbhutam

 

mukta - pearls; ratna - and jewels; pravasitam - residing; padmaraga - rubies; phala - fruits; ujjvalam - splendid; samsara - of material existance; tapa - the burning distresses; vicchedi - removing; kusala - auspicious; chayam - shade; adbhutam - amazing.

 

 

That amazing tree is decorated with pearls and jewels, and rubies are it's splendid fruits. It's auspicious shade destroys the burning distresses of material existance.

 

 

Text 14

 

 

tan-mula cintayen mantri

ratna-simhasanam subham

tatra surya-samabhasam

pankajam carta-patrakam

 

tat - of that tree; mule - at the base; cintayet - may mditate; mantri - a person initiated in the chanting of Vaisnava-mantras; ratna - of jewels; simhasanam - throne; subham - splendid; tatra - there; surya - of the sun; sama - equal; abhasam - splendor; pankajam - lotus flower; ca - and; asta - with eight; patrakam - petals.

 

 

A person properly initiated in the chanting of Vaisnava-mantras should meditate on the splendid jewelled throne at the base of that tree. That throne is a brilliant as the sun, and it appears like an eight-petalled lotus flower.

 

 

Text 15

 

 

sarva-tattvamayan tatra

cintayej jagad-isvaram

samsara-sagarottirttyai

dharma-kamartha-siddhaye

sarva - all; tattva - truths; mayam - consisting of; tatra - there; cintayet - he should meditate; jagat - of the universe; isvaram - the lord; samsara - of material existance; sagara - the ocean; uttirttyai - for crossing; dharma - religiousity; kama - sense-gratification; artha - economic development; siddhaye - for the perfection.

 

 

To cross over the ocean of material existance, as well as to attain success in religiousity, sinse-gratification and economic development, one should meditate upon the absolute truth, the master of all universes, (Who is seated upon that throne).

pitambara-dharam Krsnam

pundarika-nibhekranam

rakta-netradharam rakta-

pani-pada-talam subham

 

pita - yellow; ambara - garments; dharam - wearing; krsnam - Lord Krsna; pundarika - lotus flowers; nibha - like; iksanam - eyes; rakta - reddish; netra - eyes; adharam - and lips; rakta - redish; pani - of the hands; pada - and feet; talam - surface; subham - handsome and auspicious.

 

 

That absolute truth is Lord Krsna, Who is dressed in yellow garments and Whose eyes are as beautiful as lotus flowers. He is very handsome and auspicious, and His eyes, lips, and the surfaces of His hands and the soles of His feet are wonderfully reddish.

nana-ratna-vibhusitam

uddama-viasan-mukta-

ratna-haropasobhitam

 

kaustubha - kaustubha jewel; udbhasi - splendid; uraskam - on His chest; nana - various; ratna - with jewels; vibhistam - ornamented; uddama - large; vilasat - shining; mukha - pearls; ratna - jewels; hara - necklace; upasobhitam - decorated.

 

 

He wears an effulgent kaustubha jewel upon His chest, and He is decorated with various jewels. He appears very beautiful, decorated with a necklace of shining jewels and pearls.

ratnair nana-vidhair yuktam

kati-sutranguliyakam

gorocana-kunkumena

lalata-tilakanvitam

 

ratnaih - with jewels; nana-vidhaih - of various kinds; yuktam - endowed; kati-sutra - belt; anguliyakam - and finger-rings; gorocana - with gorocana; kunkumena - and kunkuma powder; lalata - forehead; tilaka - with markings; anvitam - endowed.

 

 

His belt is decorated with many different jewels, and His finger are ornamented with many kinds of jewelled rings. His forehead is decorated with tilaka markings drawn with gorocana and kunkuma.

nana-ratna-prabhodbhasi-

mukutam dipta-tejasam

hara-keyura-kataka-

kundalais ca susobhitam

 

nana - various; ratna - jewels; prabha - with the splendor; udbhasi - effulgenc; mukutam - crown; dipta-tejasam - very splendid; hara - with necklaces; keyura - armlets; kataka - golden bracelets; kunkalaih - with ear-rings; ca - and; susobhitam - very splendid.

 

 

He wears an effulgent crown fashioned from many jewels. He appears very splendid, decorated with armlets, necklaces, ear-rings and golden bracelets.

alaka-sobhi-sad-vaktram

pitambara-yugavatam

bimbadhara-putodbhasi-

vamsyamata-rasanvitam

 

alaka - with curling locks of hair; asobhi - splendid; sat - transcendental; vaktram - face; pita - yellow; ambara - garments; yuga - two; vrtam - covered; bimba - like the bimba fruit; adhara - lips; puta - opening; udbhasi - splendid; vamsya - from the flute; amrta-rasa - nectar; anvitam - endowed.

 

 

His transcendental face is decorated with curling locks of hair, and He wears two yellow garments. His lips are reddish like bimba fruits and the splendid flute there produces the sweetest nectar.

barhi-patra-katapidam

vanya-puspair alankatam

kadamba-kusumonnaddha-

caru-mala-virajitam

 

barhi - peacock; patra - with a feather; krta-apidam - decorated; vanya - from the forest; puspaih - with flowers; alankrtam - ornamented; kadamba - from the kadamba tree; kusuma - with flowers; unnaddha - strung; caru - beautiful; mala - with a garland; virajitam - splendid.

 

He is decorated with a peacock feather and with forest-flowers. He appears very splendid, decorated with a beautiful garland of kadamba flowers.

 

 

Text 22

 

 

koti-kandarpa-lavanya-

vilasad-bandhurodaram

venum gahitva hastabhyam

mukhe samyojya vadinam

 

koti - of millions; kandarpa - of cupids; lavanya - the beauty; vilasat - splendid; bandhura - beautiful; udaram - bely; venum - flute; grhitva - grasping; hastabhyam - in His two hands; mekhe - on the mouth; samyojya - placing; vadinam - plays.

 

 

His splendid and charming waist possesses greater beauty than millions of cupids. Taking the flute in His hands, and placing it to His mouth, He plays (the most enchanting) music.

 

 

Text 23

 

 

gayantam divya-tanais ca

Vrndavana-gatam harim

svargad iva paribhrartam

kanayaka-sata-manditam

 

gayantam - singing; divya - splendid and transcendental; tanaih - with sustained notes; ca - and; vrndavana - to Vrndavana; gatam - gone; harim - Lord Hari; svargat - from the heavenly planets; iva - just like; paribhrastam - fallen; kanyaka - of young girls; sata - with a hundred; manditam - decoarated.

 

Staying in Vrndavana, Lord Hari plays very beautiful melodies with sustained notes. Surrounded by a hundred youthful gopis, He appears like a demigod who has descended from the heavenly planets.

 

 

Text 24

 

 

go-govatsa-ganakirna-

vasa-sandais ca manditam

gopa-kanya-sahasrais tu

padma-patrayatekranaih

 

go - vows; govatsa - calves; vrsa - bulls; sandaih - and with oxen; ca - and; manditam - ornamented; gopa-kanya - of the daughters of the cowherd men; sahasraih - with thousands; tu - and; padma - lotus; patra - petals; ayata-iksanaih - with eyes.

 

 

He is surrounded by cows, calves, bulls, oxen and thousands of gopis, whose large eyes are as beautiful as lotus-petals.

 

 

Text 25

 

arcitam deva-kusumais

trailokyaika-gurum param

tumburur naradas caiva

haha huhus tathaiva ca

 

arcitam - worshiped; deva - of the demigods; kusumaih - by the flowers; trailokyaw - of the three worlds; eka - sole; gurum - master; tumburuh - Tumburu - naradah - Narada; ca - and; eva - certainly; haha - Haha - huhuh - Huhu; tatha - in the same way; eva - certainly - ca - and.

 

 

That Lord Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and the sole master of the three worlds. The demigods worship Him by offering flowers, and the Gandharvas Narada, Tumburu, Haha and Huhu also worship Him.

kinnari-mithunam capi

srutva gitam tatha hareh

vinadi-sadhanam tyaktva

vismayavirta - cetasah

 

kinnari - of Kinnaras; mithunam - pair; ca - and; api - also; srutva - having heard; gitam - the music; tatha - in this way; hareh - of Lord Hari; vina - lutes; adi - and other; sadhanam - musical instruments; tyaktva - abandoning; vismaya-avista - astonished; cetasah - minds.

 

 

When the two Kinnaras heard Lord Hari's music, they became astonished, and threw away their vinas and other musical instruments.

 

 

Text 27

 

 

te stuvanti mahatmanam

gayanto viyati sthitah

siddha-gandharva-yakras ca

apsarobhir vihangamaih

 

te - they; stuvanti - offer prayers; maha-atmanam - to the great Supreme Personality of Godhead; gayantah - singing; viyati - in the sky; sthitah - staying; siddha - Siddha - gandharva - Gandharvas; yaksah - Yaksas - ca - and; apsarobhih - with the Apsaras; vihangamaih - travelling in outer space.

 

 

Staying in the sky, the Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakras and Apsaras all sang the glories of Lord Hari, the great Personality of Godhead.

siddhair vidyadharais tatha

sakhamagair manusyais ca

vikryamanaih suvismitaih

 

sthavaraih - by the mountains and other inanimate living entities; pannagaih - by the serpents; ca - and; api - also; siddhaih - by the Siddhas; vidyadharaih - by the Vidyadharas; tatha - in the same way; sakhamrgaih - by the monkeys; manusyaih - by the human beings; ca - and; viksyamanaih - visible; suvismitaih - astonished.

 

 

The astonished mountains and other inanimate living entities, snakes, Siddhas, Vidyadharas, monkeys and human being all appeared and offered prayers to Lord Hari.

saundaryenabhisobhitam

mohanam sarva-gopinam

lokanaam patim avyayam

 

sarva - all; laksana - auspicious qualities; sampannam - enriched; saundaryena - with beauty; abhisobhitam - splendid; mohanam - enchanting; sarva - all; gopinam - to the gopis; lokanam - of the planets; patim - the Lord; avyayam - eternal.

 

 

Lord Hari is endowed with all auspicious qualities and He is splendidly handsome. He enchants all the gopis and He is the eternal master of all living entities.

naredena - by Narada; ca - and; siddhena - perfected; visvamitrena - by Visvamitra; dhimata - greatly intelligent; parasarena - by Parasara; vyasena - by Vyasa; bhrguna - by Bhrgu; angirasena - by Angira; ca - and.

 

 

Lord Hari was glorified by Narada, Visvamitra, Parasara, Vyasa, Bhagu, and Angira, who are all highly intelligent perfected being.

daksena - by Daksa; sanaka-adyaih - by the four Kumaras, headed by Sanaka; ca - and; siddhena - perfected mystics; kapilena - by Lord Kapila; ca - and; vastu - by Vastu; vagisa - by the elequent Brhaspati; harita - by Harita; yajnavalkya - by Yajnavalkya; usanah - by Sukracarya; kratu - by Kratu; markandeya - by Markandeya; bharadvaja - by Bharadvaja; pulastya - by Pulastya; pulaha - by Pulaha; adibhih - by many others; vasista - vasista; asyaih - by those headed by; muni - of the sages; indraih - by the kings; ca - and; stuyamanam - offered prayers; sura - by the demigods; asuraih - and by the demons.

 

 

King Dakra, the four Kumaras, headed by Sanaka, the perfected mystic Lord Kapila, Vastu, the elequent Bahaspati, Harita, Yajnavalkya, Sukra, Kratu, Markandeya, Bharadvaja, Pulasta, Pulaha, Vasirta and his followers, all the sages, the kings, demigods and even the demons, glorify Lord Hari by offering prayers.

brahmaloka-gataih siddhair

nana-loka-gatair api

anyair api sura-srerthaih

stuyamanam smared vibhum

 

brahmaloka - to Brahmaloka; gataih - by those who have gone; siddhaih by the perfected mystics; nana - various; loka - to planets; gataih - by those who have gone; api - and; anyaih - by others; api - and; sura - of the demigods; sresthaih - by the best; stuyamanam - glorified by prayers; smaret - one should meditate; vibhum - on the omnipotent Supreme Personality of Godhead.

 

 

One should meditate on the omnipotent Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Hari who is glorified by the perfected mystics residing on the Brahmaloka planet, by the mystics residing on various planets and by others who are counted as the best of the demigods.

 

 

Text 34

 

 

evam sancintayen mantri

cetasa Krsnam avyayam

samsara-sagaram ghoram

api vatsapasayate

 

evam - in this way; sancintayet - should meditate; mantri - a properly initiated Vaisnava; cetasa - with the mind; krsnam - on Lord Krsna; avyayam - the eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead; samsara - of material existance; sagaram - the ocean; ghoram - terrible; api - even; vatsapadayate - considers as insignificant as the water in a calves footprint.

 

 

A properly initiated Vaisnava should meditate on the eternal Slupreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krsna, in this way. That Vaisnava finds the terrible ocean of material existance as insignificant as the scanty water in a calves footprint.
