Çréla Jiva Goswämé explains in Priti Sandarbha Anuccheda 116, that Lord Balaräma’s apparent affection for Duryodhana, and Rukmini’s apparent affection for Rukmi were caused by the lila-sakti of the Lord (pastime potency), in order to increase the wonder and glory of the Lord’s pastimes.
