Mula mantras and gayatri
mantras
Every deity has his (or her) mula mantra and gayatri mantra. We need to
know these mantras in order to address the deity during the puja, just as we
need to know a person's name in order to address him. These mantras should be
learnt by heart. First the deity's name is mentioned, then the mula mantra,
then the gayatri mantra. Some deities have combined mula mantras so that they
can be worshipped together. There are many different mantras mentioned in the
scriptures but preference should be given to the mantras received from the
guru. In order to simplify this only one mantra of each kind has been mentioned

Upacara Mantra:
When
offering the articles of worship to the Lord one usually makes a vocal
presentation composed of the mula mantra of the Deity (discussed above), the
name of the article, the name of the
Deity in the dative case, and offering of respect to the Deity.
Name of the Upacara:
The
name of the upacara in singular number is preceded by the article meaning
"this" which changes form according to the gender and number of the
upacara: etat or idam for neuter words (etat padyam, idam acamaniyam, etad
acamaniyam); esa for masculine words (esa gandhah, esa dipah, esa dhupah); and
esa for feminine words (esa ganga mrttika)
If
the article is plural in number it is preceded by etani for neuter items (etani
abharanani); ete for masculine items, and eta for feminine items.
If
the article is dual in number, it is preceded by ete if the articles are neuter
or feminine (ete gandha puspe) and by etau if the articles are masculine.

Combination
of the Previous Elements:
In
the original system it seems one would
utter the mula mantra of the Deity, then the name of the upacara, followed by
the word "nivedayami", (meaning I offer such and such an item); then
the name of the Deity in the dative case, (meaning unto so an so Deity); then
the word " namah" or a similar word, (meaning I offer myself in
surrender). The meaning would be "I offer so and so upacara. Let me offer
my respects unto so and so Deity.
eg.
mula mantra + asanam nivedayami sri krsnaya namah
I offer this asana. Let me pay my respects
to Sri Krsna.
This
has been shortened by dropping the word nivedayami and adding the word
"idam" or "etat" before the upacara:

An
even shorter form, commonly used at present in many Bengali manuals, is to
simply utter the name of the upacara with idam or etat, and then the mula
mantra of the Deity. The meaning however is the same in all cases.

etat padyam + mula mantra (eg. klim krsnaya namah )
