KALI
ACT ONE
SCENE TWO
(KALI`S ROYAL COURT. PERSONALITIES LIKE LUST, GREED,
ANGER, PRIDE, ILLUSION, ENVY, ARE PRESENT THERE. SOUND OF TRUMPET ANNOUNCING
THE ENTRANCE OF KALI. )
ANNOUNCER: All glories to His Majesty the king kali. The
ruler of this age. (Everyone stands up.)
(Kali enters with sin. both look black and ugly but
powerful, dressed in royal attire. Kali sits on the throne. Lust, Greed, etc.,
also sit down.)
SIN: It gives me great joy to see how we conquered the
entire world. It was indeed a difficult task. After all no great thing can be
achieved without a hard struggle. Although it was foretold that our Lord, His
Majesty Kali, will rule over the entire Earth planet, still something so wonderful
can't be achieved without treachery, conspiracy and deceit. I remember the day,
when His Majesty just arrived in this world. Maharaja Pariksit confronted him
when he was torturing the Earth and Religion. Pariksit was about to kill him. I
was petrified and felt completely hopeless. But our illustrious king so
wonderfully deceived Pariksit by treacherously entering into the heart of the
brahmana boy Sringi, making him curse the king Pariksit, and causing him to die
by Taksaka's bite. (Laughter) Now we are invincible. We will rule over the
world till dooms day. Of course this wonderful victory has been possible due to
your relentless assistance. You have spread my domain very carefully. Whenever
you saw soldiers or religiosity, you fought treacherously and defeated them.
Therefore today conscience, renunciation and devotion is nowhere to be seen.
Well done my boy! Today I shall reward you for your mean and deceptive
activities. Tell us now about your achievements. Lust, tell us about your grand
exploits.
LUST: You know everything mother. It is due only to you
that I am able to do anything. Your hideous influence is all pervasive. Who can
ever describe your inconceivable potency. I only am trying to serve you
according to my limited means. I enter into the hearts of young damsels and
tell them, "Will you allow your beauty to go in vain? Awake, arise and
conquer. A mere glance from the corner of your eyes can make all the youth lose
their determination. The allurement of your lips can make them lose their
sanity. Your beautifully curved upraised breasts can make them lose their
consciousness and swoon. And what your narrow and swollen hips and beautifully
tapering thighs can accomplish is beyond anyones ability to describe in words.
Now go and ." Then I go to the young men and tell them, "Why are you
wasting your time in vain, O enchanter of the world. See so many beautiful
young women hankering for you. They are awaiting you in their beds of flowers.
Go, drink the honey from many flowers like a bumble bee." Hearing my words, the young man thinks
himself to be cupid and becomes afflicted by the arrows from the glances of the
young damsels. Wrapped in their poisonous embrace they become entangled in your
clutches.
SIN: Anger, tell us what you have done?
ANGER: I created war. Due to my advice people lose their
ability to reason. They kill each other. They do not respect their seniors and
spiritual masters. They kill the old, do not show any mercy to woman, kill
their wives, kill their own sons. I make everyone blind and mad and he then
comes under your control. I am not so eloquent therefore I cannot speak in much
details.
SIN: Greed, how are you serving me?
GREED: Whenever I go hell prevails. Son gives poison to
the father. Little children learn deception. So much treachery, cheating,
killing goes due to my influence, who can ever count. What more shall I tell
you mother?
SIN: Illusion, tell me how you bewilder people.
ILLUSION: Mother, my achievements cannot actually be
described in words. I spread my influence all over the world. It is due to my
influence only that, LUST, GREED and ANGER are able to do whatever they have
done. It is due to my influence a dying man cannot remember KRSNA and maintains
his attachments to matter thinking that everything belong to him. Without me
how could the influence of hell spread on this earth?
SIN: Pride, what are
your glorious achievements?
PRIDE: Everyone. Everyone
is controlled by me. It is due to my influence everyone is covered by
false ego. What could lust, greed, anger and illusion do if that false
conception of "I" was not there in the hearts of men. Tell me mother
how could anyone fall without false ego? Everyone is defeated by my deception.
SIN: Envy, now you describe how you are establishing hell
in this world?
ENVY: It will not be enough, mother, if I say that I am
actually doing everything. It is due to my influence an insignificant soul
considers himself to be great. Lust, Greed, Anger, Illusion and Pride can be
defeated very easily by intelligence. But that intelligence is my servant. That
intelligence tells man that he is the best of all. No one is there fit to
become his spiritual master and give him good advise. Thus I prevent spiritual
influence from spreading here and invite hell to prevail and increase your
domain.
(Sound of the Holy
Name)
SIN: What is this defeating sound? As if the enemy army
is rejoicing about the victory over us.
(Shouts) Generals, it seems that you all were bragging in vain. You have not
been able to defeat the enemy. Go and attack.
(Kali gets up from
the throne)
KALI: There is no need. Now our doom has dawned and your
domination is destroyed. The whole world is trembling with the sound of the
Holy Name.
SIN: Tell me my lord, what is this noise?
KALI: I do not know how to say this. Caitanya has
appeared. Alas, alas your influence is now over.
SIN: Why, what will Caitanya do to me?
KALI: Just since the time of His birth the Holy name started to spread all over the
world. Try to consider what will happen when He as a sannyasi will distribute
the Holy name to everyone everywhere.
SIN: Oh, now I understand, what this noise is about. At
the time when Rahu devours the moon, people always make this noise. There is
nothing to fear my assistants can very easily take care of that.
KALI: What will your generals do? They do not have any
influence over the devotees. Your generals are their mere servants. And now
Krsna has incarnated as a devotee.
SIN: Tell me my lord, who is there in this world whose
heart does not become afflicted by the glance of a beautiful woman: anger does
not paralyze; greed does not overpower; does not become bewildered by illusion;
does not dance due to pride and does not invite envy.
KALI: Listen my lady, you do not know the strength of a
devotee. Lust will serve him like an obedient servant __ like a horse lust will
carry him to the spiritual sky. He will utilize anger to control his mind. He
will use greed to attain the supreme abode. Illusion will cause him to shed
incessant tears at the feet of the Lord. With
pride he will always worship the Lord. And he will drive envy away __
saying "I only want to love the Lord and be His devotee with my heart and
soul" They will conquer your six generals in this way. Seeing the supreme
beauty of the Supreme Lord they will crave for the beauty of this world. They
will become mad due to the supreme lust, and their senses with folded hands
will wait for their commands.
SIN: OK. I will see how one does not gratify his senses
in his youth.
KALI: One who has offered his life and youth to the Lord,
who dare fight with him? In order to teach self‑sacrifice and love for
the Lord, the Lord Himself appeared as the incarnation of love. Now let us go
to the house of Jagannath Misra, seeing Him with your eyes purify your vision. Radha and Krsna became one as Sri Caitanya
Mahaprabhu.
SIN: If my generals are defeated. Then I will rule the
world with the help of Reason and Science
KALI: In the waves of Devotion Reason will get swept
away. Seeing that prowess impotent Science will run away a distance. If you
just see the beautiful form of Madan Mohan, the enchanter of Cupid, your stone
like heart will melt. You will automatically accept defeat. Come see it for
yourself.
SIN: Alas! To whom shall I express the anguish of my
heart. Although you my lord is the ruler of the three worlds, still I have to
accept defeat. Let us go and see who has taken birth.
ACT ONE
SCENE THREE
(FOREST ROAD ‑‑‑ DEVOTION AND HER TWO SONS CONSCIENCE AND
RENUNCIATION)
CONSCIENCE: Tell me mother, what is the use of staying on
this earth. I am wondering day and night searching for some place where I can
take some rest. But wherever I go I feel so disappointed. It seems that there
is no room for me anywhere in this world. I went to so many people to take
shelter in their hearts but I became afraid and quickly ran away. I went to the
mountain caves where the yogis are meditating in darkness. I became hopeful
seeing them from a distance. But as I came close I shuddered with fear seeing
the condition of their hearts. They all are servant of envy. Their hearts are
full of pride and they hate others. They want mystic power by performing yoga,
without the mercy of the Lord. Seeing them I ran away from there in great fear.
Ask my Renunciation, he was with me.
RENUNCIATION: Yes mother what conscience said is correct.
I saw that person with long matted hair, sitting there with his eyes closed,
and I went close to him to see him carefully. Hearing my footsteps he glanced
at me from the corner of his eyes, hoping that someone was coming to give him
something. He was completely under the clutches of greed. Wearing the apparel
of a renunciate he wants to enjoy the whole universe. I quickly ran away from
there.
CONSCIENCE: Then we saw one person, giving up his
material attachments he was absorbed in deep thought of how he could do good to
mankind. His constant concern was how human beings will be happy. But alas, his
heart is in total ignorance. He thinks that science is the only hope for
mankind. He thinks that by moving through the space by machines and controlling
different aspects of nature man will become happy. He thinks that man is the
Lord of the universe. He writes with pride, knowledge about God is the cause of
man's suffering. In great fear I ran away from there.
RENUNCIATION: I
saw that some are practicing
Tantra. Not understanding its real purpose they are plunging into hell.
They are playing with wine and women, and eating all kinds of inedibles. Tell
me how can we continue to stay in such a world.
DEVOTION: Give up your anxiety and rejoice. The Lord of
Goloka Vrindavan has now appeared on this earth. Seeing the miserable condition of the living
entities the Lord Himself has appeared now as a human being. Radha and Krsna
became one now to distribute Their love. Hearing the holy name from Him even
the stones will melt. The whole world will become inundated by the flood of
spiritual ecstasy. He is a unique incarnation __ externally He is Radha and internally He is Krsna. Fortunate
are the human beings of the age of kali. they will receive an inconceivable
gift in the form of chanting of the holy name of the Lord. The whole world will
become submerged in an ocean of ecstasy due to this holy name.
(Sound of chanting)
Listen, subduing the roar of the ocean, trembling the
earth, the joyful sound of the holy name is spreading in all directions.
Blessed is the Earth now that the Golden incarnation has appeared now. Look,
the denizens of heaven are coming in their celestial space‑ships. See the
sages are coming dancing in ecstasy like mad‑man. There is no other sound
in this world except the holy name. Everyone is dancing with their arms
pointing towards the sky. Who wants to go now even to the spiritual sky, we all
will stay in this earth and swim in an ocean of ecstasy. Let us also chant the
holy name and go to see the most beautiful Supreme Lord. (exit)
(Demigods and sages enter and start singing and dancing)
SCENE FOUR
Advaita Acarya's house. Some devotees arrive there
carrying some news for Advaita Acarya.
ADVAITA: What happened you all look so perturbed?
DEVOTEE ONE: People in Mayapur could not tolerate Srivas
Thakur's loud chanting of the Holy Name.
DEVOTEE TWO: Those atheistic brahmanas are constantly
blaspheming Srivas Thakur pronouncing him mad. They declared that the entire
village was destroyed because of him. The tyrannical Muslim ruler would tear
the village apart if they heard the people loudly chanting God's name.
DEVOTEE ONE: Some envious neighbours said they would
break down Srivas Thakur's house and float it in the river in order to get rid
of him.
DEVOTEE TWO: They say that when Srivas Thakur leaves then
only the village will be peaceful again. Otherwise the Muslim rulers will
torture us.
ADVAITA: (shouts) Who dares to stop the chanting of the
Holy Name? They do not know that the Lord has descended in this age as the Holy
Name. Listen Srivas, Ganga das, Suklumbar, I shall make Lord Krishna appear
before everyones eyes. Lord Krishna will come personally and liberate everyone
and along with all you Vaisnavas the Lord will teach the atheists love of
Godhead. If I fail to keep my promise I shall manifest my four‑ handed
form and take up the disk. I shall sever the heads of all the atheists. Then
only will I accept that Lord Krishna is my Lord and master and I'm His proper
servitor. (Oh the miserable condition of this world. The whole world is
submerged in sinful activities like meat eating, intoxication, illicit sex and
gambling, the whole world is full of violence) .
SCENE FIVE
Advaita Acarya worshipping Krishna with tulasi buds and
Ganga water loudly inviting Him to come and deliver this world. Krishna appears
to him and assures him that He would descend soon.
SCENE SIX
Devotees discussing about the appearance of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead in the age of Kali.
DEVOTEE ONE: What will happen to this miserable world.
Everywhere I see the predominance of irreligiousity. People are completely
absorbed in sinful activities. They're so submerged in ignorance that they
don't even consider the consequences of their activities. What will happen to
this world? Who will save these fallen souls?
DEVOTEE TWO: I can understand your concern. But don't
worry Krishna will take care of His children. Don't you remember His assurance,
"Whenever there is a decline of religious practice and a predominant rise
of irreligion, at that time I descend Myself. In order to deliver the pious and
annihilate the miscreants and to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent
Myself millennium after millennium."
DEVOTEE ONE: Yes I know but the world situation appears
to be so hopeless. I know that He will advent but I wonder when.
DEVOTEE TWO: The age of Kali is undoubtedly very degraded
but this age has one advantage:
kaler dosa‑nidhe rajan
asti hy eko mahan gunah
kirtanad eva krsnasya
mukta‑ sangah param vrajet
"My dear king, although Kali‑ yuga is an ocean
of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting
the Hare Krsna maha‑ mantra one can become free from material bondage and
be promoted to the transcendental kingdom."
krte yad dhyayato visnum
tretayam yajato makhaih
dvapare paricaryayam
kalau tad dhari‑kirtanat
"Whatever result was obtained in the Satya‑yuga
by meditation on Visnu, in Treta‑yuga by performing sacrifices, and in
Dvarapa‑yuga by serving the Lord's lotus feet can be obtained in Kali
Yuga simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha‑ mantra.
DEVOTEE ONE: Will He appear?
DEVOTEE TWO: In Mahabharat it has been described ญญ‑‑
His beautiful body will have a golden complexion
decorated with sandalwood pulp and garlands. He will
accept sannyas and be absorbed in chanting and
propagating the Holy Name of the Lord. In Adi Purana, it has been described:
"In my original identity I appear as a devotee in
order to establish religiosity I protect My devotees all the time."
The bhagavat also says:
Translation from the Bhagavatam 11. 5. 32
DEVOTEE ONE: What you are saying sounds very convincing but still I wonder when will He
appear?
DEVOTEE TWO: Don't worry He will come soon. Do you hear
the promise of Advaita Acarya? Do you know who this Advaita Acarya is? He is
Maha Visnu Himself. He will not only make the Lord appear but He will actually
make Radha and Krishna appear together as a devotee. Not only will the whole
world will be delivered by His mercy but actually the whole world will be
inundated by the love of Godhead in the form of sankirtan.
SCENE SEVEN
Rasa dance in Vrndavana. Radha and Krsna dancing in the
center and innumerable gopis dancing around them. Then Krsna expands himself
into unlimited expansions and dances with all the gopis. The dance stops and
Radha and Krsna walk into a flower garden and sit on a swing.
KRSNA: You should not leave your home like this in the
dead of the night and come to Me. After all You are a married woman.
RADHA: (with tears in Her eyes) Kanhaiya, no matter how
hard I try I cannot stay away. I know that I am a married woman, I should not
think of any other man, but You are My everything, and I can't forget You even
for one moment. I know that in the eyes of the world I am acting immorally. I
know I am behaving in an unchaste way. But My heart knows no one but You
Kanhaiya. Therefore the person I got married to appears to be a stranger to Me.
My heart knows that if I am at all married, then You are the person to whom I
am really married to.
KRSNA: But unfortunately You are married to someone else
and You should become a loyal wife to him and not think of anyone else. We have
been friends in Our childhood, but destiny separated us. Therefore We should
accept the arrangement of destiny, no matter how cruel it is. Chastity is the
most precious ornament of a woman.
RADHA: ( Puts Her
hand on Krsna`s mouth and stops Him) Please don't speak like that. You
are making my heart break into pieces. For You I can give up everything. My
husband, My family, society even My own life. Kanhaiya besides You I do not
know anyone. If I cannot get You in this life, due to the cruel arrangement of
destiny, then let me give up My life and be born again to get You as My husband
in My next life.
KRSNA: No, You should not think like that. Since destiny
arranged the course of Your life in a certain way, it is wise to accept that
arrangement.
RADHA: But Kanhaiya, how can I ever be separated from
You. When You are not present in front of Me, the whole world appears to be
vacant. Tears flow from My eyes like torrents of rain and a moment appears like
a millennium. Then I begin to see You in everything. Seeing the dark hue of the
distant cloud, I mistake it to be You. I run in vain to embrace it. I see a
tamal tree and mistake it to be You. Then the droning of a Bumble bee attracts
My mind and makes Me mistake that to be You who has come in order to apologize
for being away. (tears start to stream down Her eyes, and She is unable to see
Krsna. She stretches Her arms on the other side of the swing and thinks that
Krsna has disappeared.)
RADHA: (Shouts)
Madhava where are You? Please don't go away. I know You are somewhere nearby,
because I can smell the fragrance of Your body. But My eyes have become blinded
with tears therefore I cannot see you. Please come back. (She starts to run
here and there to the trees and plants hoping that Krsna would appear, but instead She finds only the fragrance of
Krsna`s body.)
KRSNA: ( amazed to see Her transcendental madness.)
I don't understand this. Although I am all cognizant, I
can't understand the glory of Radhika's love. I can't understand what sweetness
is there in Me that attracts Her in this way; and I don't understand what
happiness does She enjoy loving Me. I will not be able to understand that until and unless I
become one with Her and experience Her mood. [Krsna embraces Radha and They
become Caitanya Mahaprabhu.]
ACT ONE
SCENE EIGHT
Hundreds of thousands of people chanting Hare Krishna
Maha Mantra in the Ganges during the lunar eclipse the whole atmosphere is
filled with the sound of the Holy Name.
SCENE NINE
House of Advaita Acarya. Advaita Acarya and Haridas
Thakur are dancing in ecstasy.
ADVAITA ACARYA: My Lord has heard my prayers. Now He has
come to deliver the whole world. Now I do not have anymore anxiety. Everyone
now will become free from their sinful reactions and become delivered from
their miserable existence in this material nature. (to Haridas) Haridas lets go
and take bath in the Ganges.
SCENE TEN
Jagannath Misra's house Saci Mata sitting with Nimai an
her lap and many people men and women
are coming to see newborn Nimai with various gifts. Jagannath Misra standing
beside Saci Mata. Nilambara Chakravaty, Saci Mata's father, a great astrologer,
arrives and looks at the baby with great
joy, but then becomes surprised.
NILAMBARA CHAKRAVARTY: (to himself) This boy looks
exactly like Krishna. Only His complexion is different. I can see all divine
symptoms are on His person. Let me calculate His astrological chart and see
what His zodiac sign say. (to Jagannath Misra) Give me a piece of paper and a
pen.
[He starts to calculate while others curiously surround
him.]
NILAMBARA CHAKRAVARTY: His zodiac sign is Leo and the
time of birth also is Leo. This is an
unusual combination. This indicates a very high conjunction of planets, an area
under the influence of Sadbarga and Astavarga, which are all auspicious
moments. He will be a king among men, maybe even more. His position cannot
actually be described by words. This child will be a great scholar and conquer
Brihaspati. He will be a natural repository of all divine qualities. (to
himself) These all are the symptoms of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How
can I describe His elevated position in public. How can I broadcast that the
Supreme Personality of Godhead Krishna has appeared as my grandson.
(one saintly person present in that gathering speaks up)
: Nilambara Chakravarty, why are you hesitating to reveal the identity of this
baby? Let the whole world rejoice knowing who has descended.
Listen everybody what I say is the truth and nothing but
the truth. this child is the Supreme Lord Narayan Himself. He will establish
the essence of all religion. He will initiate a wonderful preaching movement
and deliver the whole world. He will give everyone that which is forever
desirable even by Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, and Srila Sukadeva Gosvami. Upon
seeing Him people will feel compassion for all living entities and become
callous towards material pains and joys. This will be the great benediction for
the whole world. Not to mention ordinary men, even hard cold atheists will
worship the child's lotus feet. He will be glorified throughout the entire
creation and people from all orders of life will come to worship Him. He is the
personification of pure bhagavata religion (eternal religion) the benefactor of
brahmanas, cows and the devotees and the affectionate devoted son of His
parents. This child has come to accomplish great works just as the Supreme Lord
Narayana incarnated to reestablish religious principles. Then explain the
import of this child's exalted, astrological and auspicious symptoms? How
fortunate are you Jagannath Misra, a leader amongst men. I offer my obeisances
to you the illustrious father of this child.
I feel greatly fortunate that I could calculate His
astrological chart. His name accordingly will be Viswambar. The maintainer of
the universe. He'll be known to all as the moon of Navadvipa. He is spiritual
bliss personified."
Jagannath Misra becomes so ecstatic over the description
of his son that he immediately falls down the brahmanas feet offering him
obeisances. The brahmana also catches Jagannath Misra's feet, and everyone
present shouts "Hari Hari" in great joy.
ACT TWO
SCENE ONE
Nimai is crying playing on the cot and the ladies from
the neighbourhood are trying to pacify Him in vain. One lady exclaims "O Hari how are we going to
stop this child from crying? Immediately Nimai stops crying. Everyone becomes
very surprised in this sudden change of His mood.
LADY: He stopped crying because I said Hari?
SECOND LADY: I don`t know but the change in His mood is
very surprising.
[Nimai starts to cry again. First the lady says Hari
Hari. Nimai immediately stops crying. All the ladies start laughing. nimai
starts crying again. All the ladies start to say Hari Hari Haribol. Nimai
begins to smile clapping his small hands]
SCENE TWO
Baby Nimai lying on the bed. Saci mata enters into the
room and sees some footprints on the floor bearing the auspicious marks __
flag, thunderbolt, couchshell, disk, fish atc. She immediately calls her
husband. Jagannath Misra comes in and he also becomes suprised to see those
auspicious footprints.
JAGANNATH MISRA: These are the footprints of a child. But
in this small footprints the specific marks of Visnu are visible. How is it
possible? (to mother Saci) Did you see anyone coming into this room?
MOTHER SACI: No.
JAGANNATH MISRA: I cannot understand. All I can think of
is that my house is blessed. Somehow the Supreme Personality of godhead Krishna
has taken mercy upon me and blessed my house with his footprints. Maybe
Krishna, who is with the Shaligram sila, taking His childhood form, is playing
within this room.
[Nimai wakes up and starts to cry. Saci Mata picks Him up
on her lap and allows Him to suck her breast. While she was breast‑
feeding the child she see on His feet all the marks that are visible on the
floor of the room. She calls for Jagannath Misra.]
JAGANNATH MISRA: Saci, this child is the Supreme
Personality of godhead Himself. We must have performed heaps of pious
activities in our previous lives to have the Supreme Lord as our child. let me
go and call your father and lets see what he has to say.
Jagannath Misra leaves and quickly comes back with
Nilambar Chakravarty. Nilambar Chakravarty also scrutinizingly sees the feet of
the child and His face lights up with a smile.]
NILAMBAR CHAKRAVARTY: I mentioned in the past also that
this child is Narayan Himself. There are thirty two bodily marks that symptomise a great personality,
and I see all those marks on the body of this child. This baby had all the
symptoms of Lord Narayan on His palms and soles. He' ll be able to deliver all
the three worlds. This child will preach the Vaisnavism and deliver both His
maternal and parental families. Perform a name giving ceremeny. We should
observe a festival and call for the brahmanas because today is a very
auspicious day.
SCENE THREE
Nimai sitting on the lap of Mother Saci and surrounded in
a festive atmosphere.
NILAMBAR CHAKRAVARTY:
On this auspicious day, let us give this child a name that would signify
His deeds in the future. His name should also identify His personality and
character. Generally names are given after few astrological considerations, but
names can also be given as His parents and superiors feel like.
Lady lookingly says: Since he was born under the Neem
tree, let us call Him Nimai.
Nilambar Chakravarty smiles and others say, joyfully
clapping their hands, "that is very nice, that is very nice."
NILAMBAR CHAKRAVARTY: After considering all points, I
find that there is no name appropriate for this child. As soon as He was born,
famine ended in the land and the farmers were blessed with the long awaited
rain. Happy and healthy conditions returned to the land at His birth. It was
similar to the ancient pastime of Lord Narayan protecting and upholding the
universe during devastation. Therefore His name should be Viswambar __
sustainer of the world. This is also confirmed in his horoscope. Because He is
the brightest torch‑ bearer of His family, the name Nimai will be His
second name.
ACT THREE
SCENE ONE
Nimai decorated with beautiful ornaments and small ankle
bells on His feet crawling in the courtyard. A huge white cobra slithers
through the courtyard raises its head and looks at Nimai. Nimai catches hold of
the snake and starts to play with it. The snake coils around Nimai' s body.
Saci Mata comes out of the house to find out what Nimai is doing and seeing Him
in the coil of the snake cries out "Krsna! Krsna! the protector of
everyone, please protect this innocent child of mine" and she faints. All
the residents of the house and some neighbours come out running. Some of them
shout "Garuda! Garuda!" While others waited in anxiety. The snake,
hearing all this crying and commotion,
releases Nimai from his coil and tries to go away but little Nimai tries to
stop him.
The ladies rush over and pick Nimai up in their arms,
each one blessing Him that He might have a long life.
Some relatives tie talismans on Nimai for His protection,
some chant benediction hymns and others pour Ganga water on different parts of
His body.
One lady: This child has a new life.
Woman two: I have never seen such a huge snake.
Third lady: Its colour also was very unusual.
Fourth lady: Actually this is Ananta Sesa. He came to see
His Lord and master.
First lady: Whatever may be the case our Nimai has been
saved and we must thank our Lord Narayana for that.
They take Nimai to Saci Mata. Nimai puts His arms around
His mother and Saci Mata regains her consciousness. She embraces Nimai and
tears of ecstasy roll down her e yes.
SCENE TWO
One day two thieves see Nimai roaming about in the
streets alone. Seeing His fine ornaments they conspire to steal them. One of
the thieves pick Him up.
Thief one: O my dear child! O my dear child!
Thief two: Where have you been for so long?
Thief one: Come quickly home my dear child.
Nimai smiled. Yes let us go home.
(Two thieves stay away with the Lord in their arms while
the street onlookers ignorantly think that the rightful guardians have taken
their child. One thief gives Nimai a sandesh and Nimai starts eating it with
great satisfaction.
Thief one: What a big catch. Mother Candi must be really
pleased with us today.
Thief two: Yes I have never seen such valuable ornaments
and so much gold. Now we will become rich.
Thief one: What shall we do with the child?
Thief two: We will finish him off and bury him
underground.
Thief one: Why kill such an innocent child? After taking
his ornaments we can just throw him by the side of the road then at least we
don' t have to incur the sin of killing a child.
Thief two: You are actually a woman in a man' s body.
From now on, start wearing a sari. (mockingly) Then we won't incur any sinful
reaction. Can it be called sin? When you die, everything will be finished.
Therefore as long as we are alive we must try to enjoy as much as possible. We
must kill this child because otherwise who knows, the child may tell them that
we have stolen his ornaments and then we'll end up in a prison. Never take a
chance in this business.
Thief one: Well you are the boss. So whatever you decide,
that will be.
Thief two: Yes that is the spirit. We have almost reached our house. As soon as we go there
we'll immediately slit the throat of this child and take all the ornaments from
his body. Bury him so that no one ever gets to know what actually happened.
SCENE THREE
Sacimata comes out of the house and becomes very worried
not seeing Nimai. She starts to call Nimai's name. Jagannath Misra comes out of
his room.
Jagannath Misra: What happened?
Sacimata: I cannot see Nimai.
Jagannath Misra: He has become restless. Anyway do not
worry he must be somewhere around. I am going to look for Him. Nimai Nimai!
(But Nimai is nowhere to be seen. Jagannath Misra goes to the neighbour's house
but con not find Nimai. The neighbours also come out and start looking for Him.
Sacimata starts to cry.)
Sacimata: My heart fears something inauspicious has
happened to my child. (Jagannath Misra tries to console her but she continues)
O Lord Govinda, please protect my child. Please save Him from all danger.
Right at that time the thieves with Nimai running at
great speed come right in their midst.
Jagannath Misra: Here is Nimai. (He picks up Nimai from
the shoulder of the thief.)
Jagannath Misra to Sacimata: Here is your child.
The thieves become baffled and when they realize what
actually happened, they run for their lives.
Jagannath Misra: Please do not go away like that. You
have done us a great favour and I want to reward you.
After running for a while one thief tells the other: I
don't know how we ended up there.
Thief two: It is
really surprizing. I thought we arrived right in front of our house. But we
ended up right in their midst.
Thief one: It is
ismply by the mercy of Mother Candi that we got to live today.
Thief two: Yes, we somehow managed to get away before
they caught us.
Thief one: We must
express our gratitude to Mother Candi for saving us. Let us go and worship her
very nicely.
SCENE FOUR
Jagannath Misra meets a very pious brahmana visiting
different places of pilgrimage, and request him to become his guess in his
house. The brahmana carries Lord Gopal and Salagrama Sila around his neck as
his most wonderful decoration. Jagannath Misra washed his feet and offered him
a fine elevated seat.
Jagannath Misra: O most respected sir, Where is your
place of residence?
Brahmana:
I do not have any particular place of residence. I travel throughout
different countries. My mind is very restless and I cannot stay at one place.
Jagannath Misra: It is the good fortune of the world that
you travel everywhere. You travel to purify the places of pilgrimage. I feel
most fortunate today that you came to my house. Please permit me to arrange for
your prasad.
Brahmana: Dear Misra do as you please.
Jagannath Misra makes the arrangements and brings all the
ingredients for cooking and the brahmana cooks. The brahmana sits to offer all
the foodstuffs to Bala Gopal Deity. While he is offering the foodstuffs to Bala
Gopal in his meditation Nimai appeared there naked, His entire form covered
with dust. Smiling He takes a handful of food from the Brahmans offering and
starts to eat it. The brahmana opens his
eyes and calls out: Alas! This restless boy has stolen the food meant for
offering.
(Jagannath Misra comes into the room and wants to beat
Nimai. Nimai tries to run away and Jagannath Misra chases after Him. The
brahmana stands up and catches hold of Misra's hand)
Brahmana: My dear Misra, you are a respectable and wise
person, therefore you know beating this
boy is not really going to accomplish anything. After all He is a little
child. What knowledge does He have? It
is one thing to beat a person who can reason right from wrong but what are you going to teach this
innocent child by beating Him.
Misra sits down
holding his head yet he does not speak a word nor does he lift his head.
Brahmana: Do not feel sad dear Misra. The Supreme Lord
certainly knows everything that happens at all times. Please bring whatever
fruits or vegetables you have in the house I shall simply eat that today.
Jagannath Misra: If you kindly consider me your servant,
then let me arrange for you to cook again. I shall only be satisfied when you
cool once again. (The other friends and relatives in the house also implored him to cook again)
Brahmana: Since you all desire it, I shall cook again.
Everyone becomes very satisfied and makes arrangements
for him to cook again.
Jagannath Misra: Saci, take the child to another house
and keep him there until this brahmana has
completed his cooking and eating.
Mother Saci carries the child to the neighbour's house.
The young ladies all tease Nimai.
One lady: Nimai, is this the way you should act? stealing
the Brahmans food?
Nimai: (with a
smile) What is my fault? The brahmana called Me.
One lady: Now you lose your caste. Who knows this
brahmana. Who knows where he comes from
or who his family is? How can you maintain your caste after having eaten food cooked by him?
Nimai: I belong to the cowherd caste. I accept food
prepared by a brahmana all the time. How does a cowherd boy lose his caste by
eating a brahmanas food?
(All the ladies get surprised.)
One lady: What are you talking about Nimai?
Nimai just smiles. The ladies float in an ocean of bliss
and the Lord went joyfully from arm to arm.
SCENE FIVE
The brahmana cooks once again and offers the foodstuffs
to Bala Gopal sitting in front of the plate with his eyes closed. Nimai comes there, take a
handful of prasad and puts it in his mouth and starts to eat with great joy.
The brahmana opens his eyes and sees Nimai eating the food.
Brahmana: Alas! Alas! the child ate the offering again.
(Jagannath Misra angrily grabs a stick and chased after
young Nimai.)
Jagannath Misra: You shall see! Today, I am going to give
you a punishment of your life! Did anyone ever see such a mischievous child? (
the members of the house try to stop Jagannath Misra) Jagannath Misra angrily
shouts: Leave me today I shall beat Him up.
(The pilgrim hurriedly rushes to the scene and catches
hold of Misra's hand.
Brahmana. Dear sir, please hear me. The young boy is not
at all at fault. Whatever is destined to
occur on a certain day must happen. I am not destined to have Lord
Krsna's cooked offering today. What I am saying is the confidential truth in
this matter. Sri Jagannath Misra hung
his head in dejection and because his perturbed mind he does not look at anyone.
At that time Visvarupa, Nimai older brother, arrived on
the scene. He is so charming that no beauty in all the fourteen worlds can
match it. He stands there, a brahmanas thread across his shoulders. He appears
as the identical expansion of Lord Nityananda Himself. Enchanted by His exquisite
form, the pilgrim brahmana stares at Him with a gaping mouth.
Brahmana: Who is the father of this extraordinary
personality?
Nieghbour: He is the son of Sri Misra. (The brahmana
embraced Visvarupa in extreme joy)
Brahmana: Virtuous are the parents of such a son.
Visvarupa: Our house turned auspicious and we all became
blessed with great fortune when you
came as a guest. You are happy and content with the spiritual joy within
yourself. You travel everywhere simply
to sanctify the earth. it is our immense fortune that we have a guess like you, but at the same time I feel
very unfortunate that you have to go without
eating. If the guess in the house fasts, that house becomes victim of
inauspiciousness. I received the
immense pleasure of seeing you, but it hurts me to hear about all that
occurred here.
Brahmana: Please do not feel sorry. I shall eat some
fruits and vegetables. I am a forest dweller.
You cannot get rice or cooked food in the forest. So I live mostly on
fruits and vegetables. I seldom eat
rice __ only when it comes my way without any endeavor for it. I feel I have eaten a million times over
simply from the pleasure of seeing you. Just
go and bring whatever you have in the house __ fruits vegetables or
offerings and I will eat them now. (An
extremely depressed Jagannath Misra sat holding his head between his hands, not replying to anyone. Visvarupa
goes on)
Visvarupa: Sir, you are a magnanimous ocean of mercy yet
I feel hesitant to ask you something.
Saintly person by nature feel distress at other suffering and are always
ready to expand others feeling of joy.
With a little endeavor you can cook a nice offering for Lord Krishna. This will dispel all miseries of my
family today, and I will feel maximum
pleasure and happiness.
Brahmana: I already cooked twice, yet Lord Krishna did
not allow me to eat. So I can understand
that I am destined not to eat today. This is Lord Krishna's desire, so
why should I make such an endeavor? One
may have unlimited foodstuffs in the house but he can eat only if Lord Krsna allows him. One may endlessly
try for something, but if Lord Krsna
does not desire it, he will be unsuccessful. It is now past 1.30 in the
night, going on 2 o'clock. Is it
appropriate to start cooling this late? Therefore please do not make any arrangements for cooking. I will simply eat
some fruits and vegetables.
Visvarupa: It is
not too late. Everyone will be pleased if you cook. (Visvarupa then caught hold
of the brahmanas feet and everyone in
the house entreated him to cook again. The
brahmana is charmed by Visvarupa and he agreed to cook. Everyone uttered
Sri Hari's name in joy and clean the
place to cooking.
The brahmana
proceeded to cook.
Visvarupa: Tie the
doors to the room from the outside so that Nimai cannot escape.
Jagannath Misra: That is a good plan. Tie the doors from
the outside and we will remain out of the door.
The ladies in Nimai's room said: Don't worry Nimai is
fast asleep there is nothing more He can do.
But Jagannath Misra does not want to take any chances. He
tied the door from the outside and he sits at the doorsteps with a stick in his
hands. The brahmana again makes the offering to Bala Gopala sitting in front of
the plate of prasad with his eyes closed in meditation. Nimai appears on the
scene. When the brahmana sees the young boy, he raises an alarm, but no one
hears him because they are all in deep sleep.
Nimai: What kind
of person are you? You call for me. but when I come you start to cry. When I
eat the food you offered to me you start shouting as if somebody is stealing
your stuff. I came because you called for me. Why are you blaming me? You
called me so I came to you. How could I resists? You incessantly meditate on
me, so I decided to appear before you.
(At that time the brahmana sees a wonderful sight. The
Supreme Lord stands before him in His eight handed form. In four hands He holds
a conchshell, disk, mace and lotus. With two other hands He holds butter and
eats it and with the last two hands He played the flute. He saw the Lords
entire form decorated with jeweled‑studded ornaments; His chest is marked
with Laxmidevi's sign of Srivatsa, and the priceless Kaustubha jewel hung
brilliantly with other precious gems in a necklace. The brahmana saw that the
place immediately turned into Vrndavana Dhama. The wonderful Kadamba trees
became clamorous with the chirping of birds. Cowherd boys and girls roam about
on their own and everything was exactly as he had seen in his meditation.
Overcome with ecstasy at seeing such extraordinary display of opulence, the
pious brahmana fell unconscious. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri
Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is an ocean of mercy placed His transcendental hand on
the Brahmanas body. The brahmana regained consciousness by the Lord's touch,
but he was still speechless and inert with overwhelming joy. Again and again he
fell swooning to the ground. Sometimes getting up and sometimes falling, he
moved by great upsurges of spiritual emotion. Overcome by shivering,
perspiration and horripulation, he was unable to remain still. Tears streamed
down his face incessantly. The brahmana caught hold of the Lord's lotus feet
and cried loudly for some time.
The Supreme Lord: O brahmana, please listen. In many past
lives you were my servitor. You have always meditated on Me, therefore I came
to show Myself to you. In My previous incarnation I appeared to you in the
house of Maharaja Nanda in this selfsame form, but you have forgotten Me. In My
previous incarnation as Krishna I appeared in Gokula Dhama, and in that
lifetime you were making pilgrimages to holy sites with sincere spiritual
fervour. By divine arrangement you came as a guest at Nanda Maharaja's house
and offered Me your foodstuff. In that encounter we also exchanged affections
just as we are now. I ate your offering then as I have done tonight. You are My
servant birth after birth, therefore I have appeared before you. No one other
than My servants can see Me as I am. I am entrusting these confidential topics
to you: do not reveal them to anyone. As long as My present incarnation remains
on this earth, please do not reveal My identity. I made My appearance with. I
made My appearance where the congregational chanting of Lord Krishna's holy
name was already begun, and I will initiate propagation of the chanting
throughout the world. I will freely distribute to every house the process of
loving devotional service to the Supreme Lord which is so fervently desired
even by Lord Brahma and other elevated personalities. Remain with us for some
time to come and you will see many things. But you are strictly forbidden to
describe them to anyone.
The Lord then disappeared. The brahmana in transcendental
ecstasy smeared the transcendental rice over his entire body and then ate it
while crying incessantly in ecstasy. He
danced, sang, laughed and made loud roaring sounds while continuously shouting,
"All glories to Lord Bala Gopal!"
The Brahman's loud roaring awakened the residents of the
house so he quickly restrained himself from further outbursts of spiritual
emotions and cleaned his body. The brahmana ate without worry and everyone was
immensely pleased by this.
