Subject:   Storing grains

------------------------------------------------------------

Dear prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances, all glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Two years ago we decided to built a practical facility to store

dahl, rice and wheat with a total capacity of 5 ton.

It is built in our bhogaroom near the kitchen, the framework is from steel

tubes but the grains are only in touch with wood. There is airspace on all

sides. The grains are pored in from the top and taken out underneeth so that

the old grains get consumed first. Ten procent of the wood is Ceder because

upon investigating a little they told us that cederwood composes elements

that reject the buds in the grains but if we put only Ceder wood than the

food may become affected by the chemical elements in the Cederwood.

Result is that after one and a half year we had to trough away 2 ton because

the buds developped so badly that it became useless.

Now that I am in Mumbai for some time I investigated and visited two

factories who are producing products who are sold all over India for

preservation of grains:

*Parad tablets contains Neemleave powder, Boric Acid and Mercury.

When the tablets are mixed with the grains than the grains can be

stored for 2 to 3 years without being affected by any insects.

For 100 kg you have to mix 1 kg of Parad tablets. This means 1%.

The tablets unused can be stored for a minimum of 5 years best is

in glass container, plastic airtight is also OK.

The costprice is 150 Rs per kg.

The advantage is that the tablets can be easily recognised and

taken out of the grains and even used again.

*Boric Acid I.P. White powder to be mixed in same proportion 1%.

This is OK for rice and dahl since they are washed 3 times before

cooking. It cannot be used for wheat.

       Costprice 75 Rs per kilo.

*Neemleave powder. 100% natural. Costprice 50 Rs per kilo.

*Dried Neemleaves. 100% natural. Costprice less but I don't know

       yet.

The leaves can be easily taken out and used again.

The problem is that one person says Neemleaves are good and

sufficient and another person says they do something but they are

not enough if you want to keep the grains for several years.

If anybody is interested I can send you the addresses.

Your servant,

Hrdaya Caitanya das.
